Custom crates built around the pieces you can't replace.

We build a custom crate on site to fit one piece, then pad and brace it so it can't shift. At destination, we open the crate and unpack it.

Insured, background-checked technicians. Estimates in minutes, across the US and Canada.

What we crate

  • Art crating

We crate paintings, prints and sculpture, holding each piece in foam and bracing.

  • Antiques and heirlooms

We build a custom crate for each piece, regardless of its value.

  • Chandelier crating

We crate chandeliers and mirrors, cradling glass and crystal so the weak points carry no load.

  • Piano crating

We crate uprights and grands, bracing each piano on its board for the truck.

  • TV and stone top crating

We build a cut-to-fit case for large screens, marble and glass tops.

  • Industrial crating

We crate scientific lab equipment, heavy machinery and equipment for university moves.

What custom crating is and why it takes skill

Moving and relocation companies book custom crating for the families they move. Families can also request a quote directly. Alliance builds a crate on site for one piece, sized to fit it exactly. We work on art, antiques, chandeliers, pianos, TVs, stone tops and industrial equipment.

Every technician we send is insured and has passed a background check. Alliance works only with top-rated providers who pass regular performance evaluations. Cardboard flexes under a load. A wood crate doesn't. That's why a crate makes sense when a piece can't be replaced, is worth a lot, is fragile or oddly shaped, is going a long way, or is headed into storage.

An estimate is free. Most estimates come back in minutes. Larger or unusual jobs can take up to one business day. Price depends on the pieces, the services and the distance. Every order gets one named coordinator. Order status and arrival times show up online in the customer portal. Alliance works across the United States and Canada.

How a crate gets built

  1. Measure

At origin, we measure every dimension of the piece, its weight and its weak points.

  2. Build

We cut a plywood and lumber case to fit the piece.

  3. Pad and brace

We line the crate with foam and blocking so the piece can't shift.

  4. Open and unpack

At destination, we open the crate and unpack the piece.

What happens at origin and at destination

At origin

Work we do before the move

  • Measure every dimension, weight and weak point
  • Build a plywood and lumber case to fit the piece
  • Pad and brace it with foam and blocking
  • Remove clock pendulums and weights and mark them for reassembly
  • Crate a pool table slate before an upstairs or uneven move
  • Remove chandeliers and cap the electrical lines to code

At destination

Work we do after the move

  • Open the crate and unpack the piece
  • Uncrate a grandfather clock and set it up where you want it
  • Reinstall the pendulum and weights using the reassembly marks
  • Uncrate a pool table slate for an added charge

How to plan ahead for your crate

What to have ready before we arrive

  • Know the pool table's age, size and manufacturer
  • Keep the original box and foam for flat screen TVs
  • Flag fixtures hung higher than ten feet
  • Get a price quote for fixtures hung over twenty feet
  • Check if a single slate table needs disassembly for stairs or uneven ground
  • TVs travel upright, never lying flat

Conditions and extra charges to know

  • Fixtures over ten feet need an extra technician and a charge
  • Fixtures over twenty feet need a separate price quote
  • Uncrating a pool table slate is an additional charge

About custom crating

What is a custom crate?

A custom crate is a wood case built to fit one piece. Foam, boards or braces inside keep it from shifting during transit.

When do you need custom crating instead of a box?

You need custom crating when a piece can't be replaced, is worth a lot, is fragile or oddly shaped, or is going a long distance or into storage.

Do you build crates on site?

Yes. We build every crate on site and make each one to order.

Do you crate industrial and lab equipment?

Yes. We crate scientific lab equipment, heavy machinery and equipment for university moves anywhere in North America.

Do you unpack crated pieces at destination?

Yes. We open the crate and unpack the piece at destination.

Special pieces

How do you crate a grandfather clock?

We never move a grandfather clock whole. We remove the pendulum first, then the weights, marked so each goes back in place. We build a wooden crate to the clock's size and pad it with bubble wrap. At destination, our technician uncrates and sets up the clock where you want it.

How are pool table slates crated?

Each pool table slate goes in its own crate. Slates weigh 400 to 600 pounds. If a single-slate table has to go upstairs or over uneven ground, we take it apart and crate the slate. Uncrating the slate at destination costs extra.

How should a flat screen TV travel?

A flat screen TV should travel upright, never lying down, with no pressure on the screen. The original box and foam are the best way to move it. Our technicians can also crate the TV and uncrate it at destination.
