Moving with Kids in Cold Weather: Fun Ways to Keep Them Entertained and Warm

Moving during the colder months presents unique challenges, especially when kids are involved. Keeping them entertained and comfortable on a chilly moving day requires some planning, but it can make all the difference. Here are some creative ideas to help make a cold-weather move easier for everyone involved.

Set Up a “Kids’ Zone” for Warm Indoor Play

If you’re moving locally, it may be helpful to enlist a friend or family member to host your kids for the day. If that’s not possible, designate a “kids’ zone” in the new or old home where kids can play safely while staying warm and out of the way.

Prepare this space with cozy blankets, pillows, and a few favorite toys or activities to keep them entertained. Some easy-to-pack activities include coloring books, puzzles, or building blocks. If the new space has heat but lacks furniture, set up a small blanket fort to make it extra special!

Keep Them Warm with Layered Outfits

It’s easy for kids to get cold quickly, especially when moving in and out of homes or helping with small tasks. Dress them in layers so they can adjust easily. Start with a base layer (thermal or long-sleeved), add a warm sweater, and top it off with a winter coat, gloves, and a hat.

Hand warmers can be a fun extra! Kids love warming them up and feeling toasty, and they’re perfect for tucking into pockets or gloves.

Engage Them with a Moving Day Treasure Hunt

Create a simple “moving day treasure hunt” that keeps kids excited and engaged. Before moving day, make a checklist of items for them to spot, such as “Find a box with a snowflake sticker” or “Look for the purple blanket.” As they discover each item, offer small prizes or treats.

This activity not only keeps them busy but helps familiarize them with their new surroundings, especially if they’ll be spending time in the new home on moving day.

Keep Snacks Warm and Fun

It’s important to keep little ones fueled, and warm snacks add a bit of coziness to the day. Prepare an insulated thermos with hot chocolate or warm apple cider, and bring along easy-to-eat snacks like mini muffins, cheese sticks, or fruit slices. If possible, keep a small electric kettle or microwave handy to reheat drinks or soup.

Having warm treats helps them feel comforted and energized, and you can even turn snack breaks into mini “picnics” in the kids’ zone!

Assign “Special Helper” Tasks

Many kids want to feel involved in the moving process, so give them age-appropriate tasks that make them feel like important members of the team. They can help organize small items, decorate moving boxes with colorful stickers, or even carry light, unbreakable items.

To make it fun, give them the title of “Moving Captain” or “Chief Box Decorator” and reward them with a certificate or badge for their hard work. Special helper tasks keep them engaged, feeling warm, and involved in the process.

Have a Movie Break or Storytime for Some Downtime

Moving is exhausting, and kids will need breaks throughout the day. If possible, set up a laptop or tablet with a few favorite movies or shows. Pop in some earbuds or headphones to minimize distractions for others working on the move. Storytime with a few favorite books can be just as relaxing if you prefer a screen-free option.

Create a cozy nook where kids can snuggle in and recharge. This will help them stay out of the way during critical moments and gives them a sense of stability in the midst of the transition.

Celebrate the Move with a Winter Surprise

End the day on a high note by celebrating the new home with a fun winter-themed treat. Once you’re settled in for the night, make s’mores by the fireplace (if you have one), bake cookies, or serve up a hot chocolate bar with toppings.

If there’s snow outside, consider a quick mini-snowball fight or build a snowman in your new yard. These activities make the moving day memorable and help your kids feel connected to their new home right from the start.

Moving with kids in cold weather can be a smooth and even fun experience with a little preparation and creativity. From layered outfits and warm snacks to cozy activity zones and mini-celebrations, these strategies will help keep everyone entertained, warm, and ready to enjoy their new home.
